Nicoya Peninsula -Tambor: The gateway to paradise!

Resting in the valley of a horseshoe-shaped bay, Tambor is a small quiet beach town that nurtures a laid-back atmosphere. This town is located on the west coast of Costa Rica along the Gulf of Nicoya, where calm waters ride up on a grey-hued shore colored from the neighboring volcano. With plenty of cozy hotels nearby and a beach easily accessed by car, Tambor makes for a perfect family escape.

It is also the doorway to one of the most beautiful destinations Costa Rica offers, from Tambor Airport (TMU) you can access Malpais, Montezuma and Santa Teresa Beach, all three towns are filled with mixed options and experiences.

Tambor is set in the valley of a large and calm horseshoe bay, the Bahia Ballena, a pristine beach located on Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast in an area called Costa Ballena, is one of the best places in the country to see a wide variety of engaging and exotic wildlife. During dry season whales of the seas used to come into the bay.

The beach of Tambor is easy to move around and you find shade under almond and palm trees. The volcanic history serves up grey-colored, hard-packed sand which gently slopes into the crescent bay. Low tide produces a broad expanse of beach and shallow waters are exceedingly calm, offering good swimming for even the timidest of bathers.

The beach of Santa Teresa, on the other hand, is famous for its surfing quality waves, A large tree line frames the beach of Santa Teresa, limited development and an absence of high-rise buildings maintains the pristine image of the coastline with its long sweep of white sand beach washed by the pacific surf and backed by jungle-covered hills. Behind the beach forest lies Santa Teresa's main drag which runs parallel to the coast on a potholed and dusty dirt road.

Apart from challenging surf spots for experts, there are also the easy-going breaks of Playa Carmen for novice surfers. Many hotels offer surf instruction and surf camps in Santa Teresa. When it comes time for sunset the entire town seems to gather on the beach to enjoy the cool breezes, watch the surfers, and make plans for the evening. Santa Teresa offers plenty of nightlife, especially during high season, from December to March. Extreme party time, with international DJs and many events, is during the Christmas/New Year holidays.
